Endodontists

Endodontists are dental specialists in saving teeth who have completed advanced education in endodontics. They perform routine as well as complicated or difficult and very complex endodontic procedures (root canal procedures) including endodontic surgery. Endodontists are experts in diagnosing and relieving oral and facial pain.

Oral Pathologists

Oral Pathologists are specialists trained in the nature, diagnosis and treatment of oral and maxillofacial disease investigating the causes, processes and effects of these diseases. The practice of oral pathology includes research, diagnosis of diseases using clinical, radiographic, microscopic, biochemical or other examinations, and management of patients. An oral pathologist is a dentist who has successfully completed 2 more years or specialty dental education beyond dental school.

Ontario Society of Oral Radiologists

An oral radiologist is a dentist who obtains additional training in dental radiology. This specialized training enables the radiologist to interpret x-rays, and when necessary, diagnose abnormalities. Sometimes an oral radiologist will work hand in hand with other specialists such as Oral Pathologists when making a diagnosis. General dentists and other specialists may forward x-rays in their own practice for a radiographic opinion.

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The technical term for these problems is “malocclusion” which means “bad bite”. The practice of Orthodontics requires specializes skill in design, application and control of corrective appliances (braces) to bring teeth, lips and jaws into proper alignment and achieve facial balance.

Periodontics is a specialty of dentistry, which deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the periodontal tissues that support and surround the teeth or their substitutes. It involves the maintenance of the health, function and aesthetics of these structures and tissues. It also involves the replacement of lost teeth and supporting structures by grafting or implantation of natural and synthetic materials, and the placement of dental implants.

A prosthodontist is a dental specialist in restoration and replacement of teeth. Extensive training and education provide prosthodontists with advanced skills for restoring optimum function and aesthetics to your smile. These include crowns, bridges, veneers, implants, inlays, complete and removable dentures, TMD-jaw joint problems, traumatic injuries to the mouth’s structures and\or teeth, snoring and sleeping disorders, and oral cancer and continuing care.

Ontario Association of Public Health Dentistry

Dentists with special training in community and public health are called public health dentists. Their main role is diagnosis, prevention and control of oral diseases. In other words, they must decide what the oral disease is, and figure out how to prevent it from starting and also, how to stop it from spreading.
