Ontario Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons

The Ontario Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons is the voluntary organization of certified oral surgical specialists in Ontario. Our primary service is to represent the interests of the members, but also the recipients of this specialized surgical care. It serves as the voice of our specialty to the public, organized dental associations, and to government.

What is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon?

After dental school, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons have furthered their education with four to six years of additional residency training in surgery, medicine, and anaesthesia. This hospital-based, intensive program is based in major medical centers and involves all aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the teeth, mouth, and jaws. In Ontario, before becoming licensed as a certified specialist, they are also required to pass a fellowship examination process through the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, signified with the designation FRCD(C) after their name.

At the conclusion of this very demanding process, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are well prepared to perform the full scope of the specialty, which may include the diagnosis and surgical management in the areas of:

  • Dental implant surgery
  • Orthognathic/ reconstructive/cosmetic surgery
  • Management of facial trauma
  • Wisdom teeth and other tooth related surgery
  • Cleft palate surgery
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery
  • Diagnosis and management of oral pathology
  • Provision of anaesthesia services, as required, for their surgeries.
